Just to get the process started, I chose to review some older journal entries. In my "travels" I came across an entry regarding storing up treasures in heaven. I find myself challenged by my own comments: "Good I do in other's lives cannot be lost or stolen like earthly treasures." In addition to this, I'm struck by the realization that I must pray that people would see God in those deeds because if that doesn't happen, what's the point?

The sad part of all this is that I've been able to reasonably define what to do (the journal entry is from December 31, 2007), but, by my actions, it appears that this is a mere "between-the-ears" concept that I've not adopted.

The good part is this: "For God is working in you, giving you the desire to obey him and the power to do what pleases him (Philippians 2:13)."

God's exhortation is this: "... put into action God's saving work in your lives, obeying God with deep reverence and fear (Philippians 2:12)."

Lord, may it be so.

Fictional Collection

For those who claim Christ, disregarding the Bible as merely a collection of fictional stories most certainly facilitates a shallow "faith" characterized, at best, as merely ceremonial. This position allows the individual to embrace stories that support their brand of self-righteousness while discarding those that offer challenges to that position. Their motive is highly selfish in that personal image is of highest concern, not realizing (or caring) that their brand of Christianity turns non-believers further from God and prepares the way for believers to stumble, or even fall away. They have an appearance of righteousness, but deny the power of Christ that could produce true holiness in their lives.

Worldview Misalignment

From Newsmax.com:

"Exit polls showed Obama winning big with black Protestants (94 percent backed him), Hispanic Catholics (72 percent), and Hispanic Protestants and other Christians (67 percent). So don't bother with him; he will only hate you for trying to help him. But a wise man, when rebuked, will love you all the more.

----------

One challenge is to not somehow "qualify" the rebuker when I'm the rebukee --- writing the person off as not knowing what they're talking about, or not understanding my situation. God tells us to make allowance for weaker brothers and sisters, and also not to use my freedoms to cause another to stumble.

Another challenge is to not recoil in defense if the rebuker's approach feels like an attack. There is much to be offended by in the world. If I consistently can't get past an "offense" and glean benefit from the rebuke, I will remain a legend in my own mind and a stubborn fool in the mind of others.

--> Lord God, help me allow you to be my defender. Disturbingly this opinion comes from many that claim to be Christians ... followers of Christ. I wonder if those surveyed would say something like, "Isn't it arrogant to believe that a certain faith has the only way to eternal life?" And they're right if the statement is presumptive ... coming from someone lacking any solid knowledge of what they believe. By human standards, the Bible is accurate beyond any reputable standard used in establishing the accuracy and authenticity of literature. Archaeology has, over time, proved the Bible's accuracy. Instead of arrogance, I believe trendy, pop-culture ignorance is the problem --- coupled with man's tendency to rebel against authority.

Those who claim to be Christians are truly idiots if they hold to the lie that there are multiple paths to Heaven. How can I say that? Read this:

"I do not set aside the grace of God, for if righteousness could be gained through the law, Christ died for nothing!" - Galatians 2:21 (New International Version)

If we can earn our way to Heaven (all other religions, including the Catholic Church, are all about this!), then Christ died for nothing! What kind of an idiot would claim association with a God that would unnecessarily cause a sinless man to die such a terrible death? Where's the justice in that? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' 32For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. (1 Cor. 14:33) How true it is that when there's disorder in my life, there's unrest, so it seems that Sara and I should work at a little more structure with some things at home. God also showed me that I need to be disciplined (Titus 1:8), and help carry my wife's burdens (Galatians 6:2), and to not become weary in doing good (Galatians 6:9). "That seems like a lot to do, Lord --- it feels kind of overwhelming already!" God replied, "Cast your cares on the Lord and He will sustain you; He will never let the righteous fall." Do not be afraid or discouraged because of the king of Assyria and the vast army with him, for there is a greater power with us than with him. [8] With him is only the arm of flesh, but with us is the LORD our God to help us and to fight our battles."

Later in the chapter, the Bible records that "the Lord sent an angel, who annihilated all the fighting men and the leaders and officers in the camp of the Assyrian king." (ref. 2 Chron. 32:21 NIV)

Why did God do that? Isn't God supposed to be this "anything goes, push-over" kind of God that we can all feel good about regardless of how we live our lives? Apparently not. God apparently opposes the proud. Not only does He say that ... He's been known to display that through earthly events. Sennacherib (the Assyrian King that was coming against Israel) and his officers spoke and wrote letters to Hezekiah and his leaders. Apparently Sennacherib didn't think too highly of the God of Israel ... comparing Him to the gods and idols of every other country the Assyrians had defeated. So God decided to call his bluff.

"Yeah, yeah!" you say. "Just another pesky Bible story!" Maybe. But read the following and check out the source for yourself .........

Excerpt from Encyclopedia.com:

Hezekiah , in the Bible, king of Judah, son and successor of Ahaz. During his reign Sennacherib of Assyria routed (701 BC) the rebellious Jews and exacted a high indemnity from them. However, a plague in the Assyrian army saved (690 BC) Judah from a second invasion by Sennacherib.

Hmmmmm, that plague sounds like an "Act of God" to me.

The View From, er... Day after day they continue to speak; night after night they make Him known. They speak without a sound or a word; their voice is silent in the skies; yet their message has gone out to all of the earth, and their words to all the world.

-Psalm 19:1-4

I've been pondering old days; late night camping experiences all alone staring at a perfectly clear sky and "hearing" the stars and cosmos witnessing to God's glory. I remember being in awe of what I saw ... and even remember talking to God about my life, hoping that He was there. Years later, when I first came across this piece of Scripture I was immediately reminded of those times and thanked God for patiently, steadily convincing me of His realness before I could even begin to comprehend His Word (which, at the time, was confusing, irrelevant nonsense to me). Those were times when I needed Him so very badly because I was literally in grave danger, being hunted by my worst enemy: myself. Though I wasn't ready, nor did I know how to come home, I'm thankful for those times away from the things of man because my Father used them like grains of sand to build a foundation in my heart. A platform from which He could gently speak truth to me when I was ready to hear. Praise be to God forever!

Wrong Tool

"Emotions cannot determine truth or decide right from wrong. Feeling good does not suggest that something is true, and feeling bad does not indicate it's false. Emotions contain no content, no information by which to evaluate truth or falsehood. Our reasoning capacity performs that function. Emotions are the part of the soul that appreciates and responds to life. Expecting them to identify truth is like asking our ears to smell a flower."
- Dr. Rick Cornish, 5 Minute Apologist, p. 36

It's strikes me that Satan's plan is to heighten my emotions and urge me to give them authority over truth. It's this strategy that he uses to keep me from really knowing and experiencing God. When I feel God's favor, I feel strong; when I don't feel His favor, I feel weak. Shouldn't God's promises make strong? As I write this, I begin to identify with the oracle written by Agur, son of Jakeh, recorded in Proverbs 30:

I am weary, O God; I am weary and worn out, O God. [2] I am too ignorant to be human, and I lack common sense. [3] I have not mastered human wisdom, nor do I know the Holy One.

But, since all wisdom ultimately comes from God (ref. Proverbs 2:6) and that He shows favor to the humble (ref. Proverbs 3:34b), I'm thankful that God would grant me the wisdom to see that I'm ignorant so that I can ask him for His help (be humble before Him) so that He could show me His favor. How gracious is He!

Who's Dave Dravecky?

"I've come to realize that real growth of character takes place in the valleys of life." - Dave Dravecky

I was looking through my Franklin-Covey planner (does anyone really still use this calendaring/scheduling method besides me?) yesterday and came across this quote. In fact, I kind of forgot about using that little skid loader! A LOT is new since then. My Boy turned one year old and is now on his way to 15 months. My how time flies. I'm also just finishing my first online class toward a Business Management degree. So far so good, though the workload has been huge!

From the spiritual side of things, what "struck" me today (I think it started at Sunday's church service) is that Christ Jesus came to earth to suffer as a man so that we can completely trust his guidance. Hebrews 1 assures me of this. There's nothing (temptation) that I've faced that Jesus didn't face, feel, and effectively deal with ... and yet he's compassionate toward us; making allowance for our weakness. I wish I was like that.

Kingdoms

I'm feeling like a bit of a pawn ... a bit deceived ... but a whole lot better since last night. The story is about Kingdom Building. The moral of the story is not quite clear, though the lesson involves balance. I think that "knowing and then clinging to the truth" is what I'm being taught ... once again. God continues to be gracious and merciful to me.

Without getting into the play-by-play of it all, I've been chasing after an earthly kingdom. My own earthly kingdom. My days and weeks have been filled with strategizing ... looking for ways to make more, have more, etc., etc. I don't think there's anything wrong with making good decisions about the future, but when the decisions and preoccupations revolve, primarily, around finances and what would be good for the here and now ... well, I've been deceived (thorny heart soil).

On my way home from church service yesterday, I felt a reminder of Matthew 6:25-33 ... bottom line: "don't be worried (obsessed with) about worldly things, but seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and you will certainly be taken care of."

The fog was beginning to lift.

Then last night, I was reading a book that led me to a 2 Timothy reference that, in turn, referenced Numbers 16:5. So I turned to Numbers 16, and before I could read verse 5, I read this: (Numbers 15:39 NIV) "You will have these tassels to look at and so you will remember all the commands of the Lord, that you may obey them and not prostitue yourselves by going after the lusts of your own hearts and eyes."

God had just told the Israelites to put tassels on their garments. Verse 15:39 explained why. And it struck me right then and there that I'd not been primarily building God's Kingdom, but trying (without any success) to build my own.

I've been corrected. I have work to do in terms of "putting tassels on my garments as reminders," but the fog has lifted and I don't feel that desperation in my heart ... I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. [10] The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."

Strong words by John the Baptist. The point? Can a diseased tree produce good fruit? Can an apple tree produce oranges? Just as the type and condition of a tree is recognized by its fruit, so a man is recognized by what he does. A man isn't justified before God by what he does (only the pure blood of Christ Jesus was able to make that purchase). And since man is good at rationalizing behavior, John cut right to the chase, and then added a warning: a man's actions (fruit) reveal the state of his heart (condition of the tree) regardless of how you see yourself ... and a bad tree will be disposed of.

Imputation

"Our (the believer's) new status in God's eyes is not based on any actual condition of righteousness in us but on Christ's imputed righteousness that God considers ours. Because imputation does not infuse us with righteousness, our internal character is unchanged by imputation. Imputation refers only to God's crediting Christ's righteousness to our account, not our acquiring righteousness in our nature. That righteous character is developed over time through spiritual growth reulsting from the sanctification process."
- Dr. Rick Cornish, "5 Minute Theologian"

It seems common for people to "get saved" and not feel any different. The above statement gives some perspective.

When God brought me to the point of decision and gave me the faith to believe, He "connected the power." Salvation/justification is a one time occurance. But learning how to use the power is my responsibility. Though God puts a desire in each of us to know Him and follow (Philippians 2:13), we still need to make effort. Sanctification is the ongoing pursuit of personal righteousness through personal communion with God. It doesn't come as standard equipment ... it's an option.

And now, for something completely different .....

Faith In Action ....

I'm sitting here watching one of my fellow Christians taking it on the chin again by a guy who thinks he knows "everything" ... even though that's not what he'd say. Proverbs 1:7).

Face Value

(Proverbs 26:24-26 NIV)
A malicious man disguises himself with his lips, but in his heart he harbors deceit. [25] Though his speech is charming, do not believe him, for seven abominations fill his heart. [26] His malice may be concealed by deception, but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly.

Self-less ambition. No agendas. Face value. How I long for it! Unfortunately, these things require a fight. With others? Yeah, fights happen between people, but only as a result of losing the first fight (ref. James 4:1-3).

The fight with self needs to happen first ... thus termed above as the "first fight." Complete honesty with self and God. The pride inside of a man doesn't like this confrontation. But choose not to fight and that very pride will increasingly demand "catering to." Pride is mean. It'll then cause the man to paint a picture of selflessness ... possibly even of being "the victim." It'll cause him to pretend to be "for the cause" and actually say so. Pride is sneaky.

"... but his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly." Sound ideas will be offered, but those that clash with his "kingdom" will be routinely resisted by the prideful man. "Issues" always arise. Eventually, discovery occurs ... the facade of cooperation (being "for the cause") crumbles ... and a tarnished reputation follows.

Power and Strength

(Proverbs 24:5,10 NIV)
[5] A wise man has great power, and a man of knowledge increases strength; [10] If you falter in times of trouble how small is your strength.

* Through persistent action, water will erode a rock. [17] Therefore, dear friends, since you already know this, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of lawless men ....

While spending time in the garage yesterday afternoon (I'm currently on vacation), I was listening to a couple of guys talking "un-biased" politics on WCCO 830 AM. (How can anyone really claim that??---as if any of us are purely objective.)

One of the "un-biased" guys was "challenging" one political party for laying claim to being God's party (though I've voted, in the past, in-line with this party, I was not aware of this claim ... how uninformed I am!). He went on to say how offensive it must be to God, etc., etc. He said that religion shouldn't even be mixed in with politics, but instead of letting it lay, he then continued on ... talking about how he'd studied Theology and, in his younger years he'd considered going into the priesthood, blah, blah, blah. After all that, he claimed authority on the Word of God and would challenge anybody in the political arena regarding the application of religion to their politics. He "waxed poetic" about how Jesus claims that we need to help each other, be kind, and, basically, just play nice in the sandbox together.

Like so many other clowns that boldly make biased statements without an on-hand counterpoint, he errs in his "wisdom." In this case, a liberally-biased person has chosen to forget the difficult things that Jesus preached. All Scripture is "God-breathed" (2 Timothy 3:16-17), not just selective passages ... not counting the Old Testament as "bunk" like the radio-guy said.

When Jesus came a-callin', He "upped the ante" of the Old Testament ... calling people to account for the attitudes of their heart, not just their outward action. By going deeper, He called everyone to a level playing field ... 'cuz some of us are just better at being sneaky, or are more practiced with our "poker faces." He made statements like: if a person has even lusted after someone in their heart, they've committed adultery (Matthew 5:27-28); if anyone has ever hated someone, they've committed murder (Matthew 5:21-22). He also said that unless a man is born again, he can't even see the Kingdom of God (John 3:3).

The point that I'm trying to make is this: Anyone, and I mean ANYONE, speaking into a microphone about the things of God needs to be listened to VERY cautiously. Too many people, when they read the Word of God, are literally reading someone else's mail. They don't "get" most of the context of the book because it's a letter written by God to His children (those who are born again, not just born - John 1:12-13). Without being born again, a person doesn't have a chance of "getting it." One of God's basics is that "fear of the Lord is the beginning of all wisdom" (Proverbs 1:7). So please, please be careful of human opinion masquerading as "religious wisdom" ... especially now that election stuff is not far 'round the corner (this applies for all sides!).

Footnote: To become a child of God is not an exclusive privilege, but it does have a membership fee. There is a cost. But what you get in return for what you "pony-up" is beyond compare. Membership status is beyond anything we can imagine, though we do get glimpses. To become or not become a member is the single-most important thing one can decide, yet all are (or were) blinded to its importance. The cost is that which anyone can afford, but few are willing to pay. And ironically, hanging on to it is the source of every conflict we have. What is it? Pride. (John 16:9)

Pop Psychology ... God telling me, especially in verse 18, the power of the tongue in any little skirmish ... and ultimately revealing how life's "battles" are most often won or lost.

Even though my flesh is "robbed" of instant gratification, I praise God for truth because His Word counsels me how to not totally destroy my life with my own weapon ....

Kindness Ain't Cheap ...

... it's costs my flesh everything [read: pride]!!

If not for God's grace, I surely would have "ripped some heads off" already today. I'm enduring difficult, stress-filled moments that I don't believe are even remotely necessary. Oh, there's people to blame, and its my unbridled desire to crush them with harshness ... to "knock teeth down throats." The way I feel right now is this: life would be so easy if it wasn't for all of these stupid people!!

[deep breath]

(Proverbs 11:17 NIV)
A kind man benefits himself, but a cruel man brings trouble on himself.

God is warning me!! God is reasoning with me. He has clarified that "when pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom" [Proverbs 11:2]. Unfortunately (or maybe, in reality, fortunately) I have no idea of how to go about this right now ... except to pray. Ask for help. The cost that I'm having a hard time paying is the cost of my pride (asking for help) ... and the cost of anger (forgiveness). My flesh really wants to hang on to this stuff, but God is warning me that "a cruel man brings trouble on himself."

So, indulge my flesh, or walk in faith? My flesh argues with true reason, saying, "you're a fool to let this go!!" God says, "you're a fool if you don't let this go!!"

Interestingly, I understand free will more right now than ever. I have the choice of my response. A wise man would see beyond his emotion and at least look at his own experience ... which, in my case, tells me that the results of my choices are not negotiable. God's Word is the unmoveable lighthouse!!

So, basically, I'm staring myself down ... asking, "Well, what's it gonna be ... punk??"

News Flash!

Over the course of last week, my attitude gradually deteriorated into general, miserable grumpiness. My wife, the lucky woman that she is, got to experience some of it, too ... graciously biting her tongue a-half-dozen or so times over the course of an hour after I'd arrived home from work on Friday. And all of this just in time to go lead people into worship at our church. What a mess! Saturday wasn't much better. Sunday morning before church service, I got up early and got into the Word ... confessing my behavior/attitude to God, determining to change course, and just generally asking for help. This is where I was led ....

(John 6:53;56 NIV)
Jesus said to them, "I tell you the truth, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you. [56] Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him."

(John 15:5 NIV) [Jesus speaking]
"I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing."

Honestly, as I read these things, I first kind of thought, "Yeah, I know this ...." But then I got this thought ... "do you really know this stuff? Have you really been walking with Jesus this week? Have you been abiding in Him, or just taking time to read His Word and then go on your way?"

Here's the point ... the NEWS FLASH! Abiding is a way of life, not part of my life. This is a 24/7 thing, not one hour of my day. This, for me, is a reminder. The thing that strikes me most, even now, is that because of my laziness/apathy/complacency/lack-of-discipline, others also suffer. Not only do I experience "death" in my heart (Galatians 6:8), but anyone that is unfortunate enough to be around me will experience the shrapnel wounds caused by a miserable heart.

"Honor God, Benefit Others" Action Step: ruthlessly, daily, crucify the flesh!

Too soft? or wise?

(Proverbs 15:1, 18 NIV)
[1] A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. [18] A hot-tempered man stirs up dissension, but a patient man calms a quarrel.

* Probably THE biggest challenge in my life is being patient and loving (a gentle answer). I have opportunity in every aspect of my life to practice these things. This is quite difficult at times and thoroughly goes against the grain of my selfish nature. But I keep going ... keep pursuing, imperfect as my pursuit is, all the while placing my trust in God's promise ... that those who are trained by discipline (not just those who endure it) will reap a harvest of righteousness and peace (Hebrews 12:11, Galatians 6:9).

Near-sighted

Most Americans literally "live for the day." Its pretty easy to verify that by doing some top-line internet research regarding the average credit card debt per capita. True, that doesn't tell the whole story, but that information coupled with how much the average person saves (for a rainy day or retirement), plus the number of personal bankruptcies declared every year and the "live for the day" picture begins to come into focus. Even if you wish to argue those points ... or just say "so what?" ... the truth is that we put a lot of time/effort into pursuing or doing things that won't be of benefit to us for very long.

"To make the best use of your life, you must never forget two truths: First, compared to eternity, life is extremely brief. How about if that same statement (expressed a little differently) came from the lips of a person that most people try to simply brush off as a great teacher (without really knowing what he taught) ....

"Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

"Sell your possessions and give to the poor. [13] That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil --- this is the gift of God.

* Could it be that Mick 'n The Boys have been looking in the wrong direction all this time?? If that didn't make sense, don't spend a lot of time thinking about it! :)

When asked about our weekend, most of us respond with how busy we were ... rushing here and there, and being glad to be back at work to take a rest! And if we do have a slow weekend, we're somehow less excited about admitting, "I just hung around the house and took it easy." (Opinions/observations from a recovering work-a-holic!!)

Interestingly, one of the wisest, wealthiest, most powerful people that's ever lived "boiled-down" true satisfaction to living what most of us mock/parody ... a simple life. King Solomon confidently wrote this "simple life is best" sentiment over and over in Ecclesiastes. Though he'd truly "been there, done that," he continually states that if a man finds peace with his station in life and enjoys what he has, he's truly reached the pinnacle ... regardless of socio-economic position.

This always brings me to a "fork" in the road. Do I take Solomon's comments as insulting ("how does some rich guy get off telling me 'blah, blah, blah'!?") and decide I'm gonna prove him wrong by embarking on my own endless pursuit of wealth/fame/stuff? Or do I step back, once again re-align my view of true gifts, and thank God for working in my life ... bringing peace where it counts.

Too Quick!!

Proverbs 20:3 NIV
It is to a man's honor to avoid strife, but every fool is quick to quarrel.

* Everyone is born foolish (Proverbs 22:15), therefore, exiting the womb is the only requirement for "picking a fight." As much as it depends upon him, the man of godly character does what he can to live in peace with everyone (James 1:19-20) ... though that doesn't mean putting aside what is right in order to keep "peace."

Where do I need to begin avoiding strife?---that's the question! [4] The man who says, "I know Him," but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. [5] But if anyone obeys His word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him: [6] whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.

* Faith, of any kind, produces actions. For example, faith in relativism produces complete selfishness. Actions are the indicator of what I truly believe, therefore, the Christian faith that I claim can be measured by my obedience to God's ways ... by comparing my walk to Jesus' walk. If my walk looks little like that of Christ's, then it follows that I really know little of Him ... at least anything beyond words.

Along with this is God's grace, illustrated in 1 John 2:1-2.

Just be kind .....

Proverbs 15:30 NIV
A cheerful look brings joy to the heart ....

This is one way that I can "Benefit Others" (the second half of my personal mission statement). Just be kind. Though, sometimes, this is much easier said than done.

Romans 6:11-13 NIV

[11] ... count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus. [12] Therefore, do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires. [13] Do not offer the parts of your body to sin, as instruments of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer the parts of your body to Him, as instruments of righteousness.

* Effort is necessary to resist sin. Why is that?? Because sin appeals to human desire. So if it feels good, why not do it?? Just because God said so?? Well, yeah. BUT, additionally, I personally benefit if I choose the path of righteousness. It's about delayed gratification. In general, as a true Christian (not just a church-goer), God has forgiven me of all my wrongs ... truly setting me free. But He's has also set guidelines ... and, anyway, not everything is beneficial!! How is it beneficial for me to become addicted to anything?? Caffeine, cocaine, beer, TV sitcoms, music ... or anything that I just gotta have in order to sustain my life, besides God. True freedom is being able to walk this life free of the pull of things ... not indulging in everything that crosses the radar.

Speaking from experience, living to please myself eventually brings destruction, while living to please God brings life and peace ... in spite of my immediate circumstances.

The Crazy Things We Do!!

They're coming!!

The Boy has his first teeth coming through (the lower front two) ... Beyond that, I've also got the choice to accept the Word at a casual level, OR really treasure it and build a "storehouse" for it in my heart.

[2] turning your ear to wisdom and applying your heart to understanding ....

My Thoughts: It occurs to me, once again, that wisdom doesn't just fall into my lap (although arrogance and pridefulness seem to!!). To acquire wisdom is just that ... an acquisition! True wisdom comes only through deliberate pursuit ... and God's grace.

[3] and if you call out for insight and cry aloud for understanding, [4] and if you look for it as for silver and search for it as hidden treasure .....

My Thoughts: Only when I've been truly interested in something (deeply interested), have I put forth the effort to "call out for insight" or "search for it as hidden treasure." Do I begin to understand the powerful gift/privelege that I've been given? By my actions, I have to admit, "not nearly enough!"

[5] then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

My Thoughts: yet another faithful promise of God. Is it easy to get this? No! It requires a commitment. Jesus was recorded in Matthew's gospel as saying to not throw pearls before swine. I believe He stays truth to his own "advice" and doesn't just casually give away knowledge with commitment. And even if He does, without my knowing Him, the knowledge and understanding He sends is kind of 2-D at best. Reminds me of knowing facts about someone vs. knowing them.

[6] For the Lord gives wisdom, and from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.

My Thoughts: Plainly nad simply stated: God is the owner of knowledge and understanding ... wisdom. Worldly wisdom is based mostly on what is relevant to the culture of today ... our own experiences ... quite possibly just our own arrogance. Could it be that the degree to which I balk/bristle to God's Word is proportionate to how entrenched I am into the worldly system of thought??

Huh??

It's amazing how little I know about computers ........

What are these?

My son "found" his toes last night! As I've worked on that (and other things that relate to my work as a CADD guy), I've also developed a mission statement for personal conduct ... something that I can really internalize. More on that later.

Back to the story, but first, a little background .....

As I've prepared for worship services over the course of the last few years, God has consistently impressed on my heart that He wants what I share (personal thoughts, prayers, etc.) to be an encouragement to people that come seeking Him. The greater idea being that God would be found by seekers, and that I would truly be part of leading people into His presence, not an obstacle to go around.

Fast-forward ....

The start of my "re-thinking process" was innocent enough. Prior to getting started with praise songs on that fine morning, I greeted the congregants. Their response was less than enthusiastic, so I felt the need to bring this to their attention. Being a "fix-it" kind of guy, I pulled out a well worn tool for the job. Sarcasm. I'm not talking "dry wit" here, I'm talking true sarcasm. Ya know, the kind of smug comment that originates somewhere in your heart, gets translated into cutting words by the tongue, and then proceeds over your lips while the "10-second-delay 'bleep' squad" (a.k.a your brain) is on break.

Once that was over, I proceeded "business as usual" with leading praise songs.

After the service, my earlier exchange with the crowd was called to my attention by a respected brother. I immediately felt the weight of my actions. I wanted to somehow apologize to everyone for my mouth. Too late. So, I walked out to my car and began to pray. I told God that I felt like I had just struck His sheep with what I'd said ... having the image in my mind of a bad shepherd that only does the right thing when the sheep's owner is looking. It then dawned on me that the sheep I'd "struck" aren't only His sheep ... they're His bride.

I was crushed. I prayed that God wouldn't allow my thoughtlessness to come between Himself and anyone hearing the message ... especially seeking unbelievers. I got in my car and sat there for a few minutes just feeling stunned. Even on my drive home, I couldn't shake it. When I walked through the door at home, Sara asked me how things went. I told her that things had gone pretty well except for this one thing. At that point, I just kinda broke down in tears.

After composing myself, she and I began to talk about purpose. She asked, "What's the purpose of the greeting, anyway? What are you trying to accomplish? Are you trying to be funny? Are you trying to make people feel welcome? What are you trying to do?" I admitted that I'd never really thought about it and wasn't really sure. After more thought, I realized that the greeting sets the tone for the worship experience. For some that are in attendance, this may be the first time they've stepped inside a church in years. So I started to think about how this initial, official greeting might affect them?

I decided that this part of my "mic" time needs as much thought as any other part of what I do ... maybe more because it sets the initial tone. Will it be a constructive tone to build upon ... or destructive tone to overcome. So I've begun to work this out.

While thinking about this, I began to think more about my whole life. Home life, work life, etc. What is the purpose of my every move? And how will I truly be an impact player ... not just think that I am. So after some thought, I've come to a better understanding that in order to be a MVP, I truly need to adopt the method of MVP (my own acronym, by the way). You're probably thinking, "Hmmmm, MVP (in the "method" sense) ... what's this guy talking about?"
Well, there's three things that gotta happen in my life and MVP sums it up. Actually, there's a fourth, but I consider that a "given."

The "M" stands for Mission. (I may comment on the "V" and the "P" in a future post or two.) And thus, my mission was born. Not original. God said it first. If it's profound, it is so only because <drum roll> ... God said it first. But here it is in my own personalized way: Live To Honor God and Benefit Others. In short, as the title of this post indicates, "Honor God, Benefit Others." This is the first step .....

And so my Christian journey continues, marked with new refinements and the undeserved favor/power that Jesus Christ gives for those that ask.
